Date of Birth: January 27, 1912
- Location: Oslo, Norway - Profession: Professor Emeritus - What are you most excited about right now? Going to Northern Norway to swim with dolphins in the ocean. - Who or what has influenced you the most? Gandhi and Spinoza because of their philosophies: Gandhi his non violence and Spinoza his philosophy about freedom and emotions - What is your biggest road block when it comes to working? too much administrative work when I was head of Dept at the Philosophy dept. Not enough time to be out in nature and to do research.. - What do you hope to do in the future? for society? that people are more conscious of the environment and the damage they have done and are doing to Nature. For myself? to do more fun things before I die. - Does your work fufill you? looking at the list of publications (40 books and hundreds of articles) it must have, or I would not have gone on doing what I did for over 60 years - What antagonizes you the most? Nothing much. I am not the kind to be antagonised - What is your working space like? I share an office at the university with my wife who is also my associate since 1989. It is a room perhaps 6 times 2 meters full of books and papers. Outside this office are bookshelves packed with books on ecology. - What makes you do what you do? If 'doing what I do' means writing all those books and articles, it is because I believe one should always speak up if one has something important to say. I often talk of 'invading the media' meaning, if you get 10 minutes to talk about things that matter for nature and/or for humanity, there would be ten LESS minutes for the media to talk nonsense and convey false values. - Explain a formative moment or idea for you. When I as a 5-year-old saw the mountain Hallingskarvet for the first time. I felt that the mountain was beckoning to me and talking to me. In more than one way that moment has shaped me into the person I am. I still see 'things' in nature, mountains, trees, rivers etc as alive. [Close Interview] |
